Apple unveiled the Apple Vision Pro. A ‘new computer’ as Tim Cook called it. Love that.
With those two words he summarized the approach with which Apple tackles opportunities. It isn’t setting out to create a Metaverse or a new fancy gadget. It is creating a new computing interface with less buttons.
The Vision Pro is Apple’s take at the next level computing interface. It is not a virtual reality headset. It is not an interpretation of some Metaverse. It is not a toy for gaming. It won’t be a mass market device (yet). And it is not (yet) the ideal headset (is there one?).
It is a mixed reality device that blends digital content with your physical space. It is about the human experience. Meaningful experiences. Connecting people and emotions.
You do the things you currently do in front of a laptop or television. Watch movies, browse the web, design. Only soon you do it without the laptop or TV, and without a keyboard or remote control. In 3D. But with your hands, voice and eyes.
Unless you plan to spend twice what you would spend on a new MacBook Air, and look like a pro skier with an extra battery pack, this first versions is not for you. Unless you can’t wait to experience multimedia like never before or are an early adopter.
I was sceptical. Headsets aren’t new. Virtual reality is cute, but I am still waiting for proof why I should care outside of gaming. I still do not own an Apple Watch, but the Vision Pro got me extremely excited.
My neurons started flying when thinking how developers will create use cases, bringing their own apps to a whole new level of interconnectivity. I love that I am not thinking about what I would experience in some other ‘verse’. It was soothing not to hear about AI-this and AI-that in conjunction with the Vision Pro.
I wish I could get one, just to show my dad what’s possible today. With the opportunities he is familiar with.
